Lawrence Welk's TV show was a favorite for many years, particularly with the older demographic. I lived with my grandparents for a year when I was in 9th grade, and they watched the show every week. That experience taught me that a brass player could enjoy the show for the fine playing every week (even if the arrangements weren't sophisticated). Over the following years I learned that Bob Haven...

A special performance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno hosting. I cleaned up the video as much as the source material would allow, but it helps you see the players much more easily. I also brought some highs back into the audio. The original video source (which also includes in interview) is here: archive.org/details/youtube-o6WKE4aYgOw

Lawrence loved to feature this small group from his full orchestra. And the players are all excellent. My personal favorite is trombonist Bob Havens!

This march is a lot of fun and just as much of a challenge! It should be played at a fast tempo, but the double tonguing falls in an awkward way. Most of the technical challenge is in the first half of the march, which is presented here. Give it a try! The sheet music (treble and bass clef) is available for no charge here: www.dwerden.com/Source/SharedParts/Magnificent.pdf

New performance of Morning Song, by Roger Kellaway. Part of my euphonium recital at the University of Iowa in March 2015. It's a great song for euphonium, even though it was written for tubist Roger Bobo. But the range is right in the core euphonium range (and above that typically written for tuba). I had the approval of composer Roger Kellaway for performing this on euphonium. The sheet music ...

From a funeral service at Advent Lutheran Church in Maple Grove, MN. I use books often that have the melody and descant written out in the common hymnal keys. Here is a bit more about the idea: www.dwerden.com/forum/forum/euphonium-tuba-and-general-music/euphonium/euph-music/9571-hymns-and-descants-for-church

This is a fun, quirky march originally written for piano, and I moved it to solo euphonium with piano (or it might better be called a solo/piano duo). I expect my publisher will have it out in 2024. This is from my collection of historic female composers. The Chaminade set should be published in 2024. #marches #femalecomposers #womencomposers #chambermusic #euphonium #baritonehorn #baryton #fre...

Johnny's warm relationship, and admiration for Doc was touching. And, btw, that Tonight Show Jazz Orchestra, was absolutely devastating. Absolute heavy hitters, top to bottom. I always wished though, that Doc would have played in the staff more. He had absurd range, but it seemed like that's pretty much all he did sometimes, and there was a lot more to his skill than that.

Bob Havens was Al Hirt's trombone player for a number of years beginning in the in the mid-50s at Dan's Pier 600 in the New Orleans French Quarter. His wife, Jo, worked there with him as a cocktail waitress. I was a student at Tulane and went there often.

Doc was easily… and is still easily one of the finest all-round trumpet players who ever lived. That was a tough piece to make music out of and he did so quite thoroughly. And to play that entire piece straight through With that immense sound of his is just an incredible feat of endurance.
